This blog kicks off a dream of mine (and it’s in the making as I type). Thirty years of work, school, motherhood, LIFE plus a PhD on the topic of women and girls in STEM, and Here. We. Are. Me, sharing what I know, so it can help others find their way too.
A little about me…
I am a mother, wife, daughter, sister, engineer, business woman, scholar and researcher, and a staunch advocate for women and girls entering and staying in STEM fields.
I am also a hard-working immigrant who is fearless. In these blogs, I will cover LIFE. Life as a woman living in America, starting her own business after working in Corporate America (private and public sector) for 30+ years while raising two amazing kids, married to a wonderful man. I usually cover workplace topics such as women in the workplace, remote work, the job hunt, and women in STEM on LinkedIn, but in my blog, I will be expanding on other topics from my life experiences.
Thus, this first blog is just to provide context, starting with my childhood, growing up in Iran, Germany, and finally the United States. My family of origin are Armenians. You may know about our tragic history (we will cover that in another post). Armenians can be found in many countries outside of Armenia, due to migrations caused by the Genocide of our people in Armenia (1915) and other tragedies and landgrabs in our multi-thousand-year history. My ancestors happened to have settled in Iran 500 or so years ago.
In the first decade of my life, I moved four times, learned four languages, changed many schools, saw war (in Lebanon, while on vacation) and a revolution (just starting in Iran as we were leaving Germany to come to the US for my dad’s job). Within a few months of moving to the US, many people we knew from Iran also moved to the US to seek political asylum.
Eventually, we settled in Southern California, LA to be exact, where my sister and I have built lives and careers (ones that we can be proud of), with children and supportive partners who enrich our lives. The journey of a Solopreneur begins now as I embark on coaching individuals and organizations on better ways to manage half the population who is merely asking for equality, respect, and a strong footing in (high paying) STEM careers.
I am looking forward to your company and helping you and others, on this new wild ride!!
